What if ageing was no longer inevitable? And if science could radically extend the human lifespan, would living longer necessarily mean living better?

Until explores the science and philosophy of ageing, longevity and death. The documentary brings together researchers studying the biological mechanisms behind ageing with people at very different stages of life — from children to the elderly — to examine what a dramatically longer human lifespan might actually mean.

At the heart of the film is a deceptively simple question: if you could live forever, when would you choose to die?

Rather than treating longevity purely as a medical challenge, Until considers what ageing and mortality mean to us as human beings. If science eventually gives us greater control over the length of our lives, it may also force us to reconsider some of our most fundamental assumptions about life itself.

The documentary was supported by the Wellcome Trust and received the Nature People’s Choice Award at the Imagine Science Film Festival.

The search for longer life is becoming one of the most fascinating frontiers of modern science. Until takes the question one step further: before asking whether we can defeat ageing, perhaps we should ask whether we really want to.
